A cloak of protection is a cloak that increases Protection, contributing to ordinary damage absorption and certain magic-resistance checks. Its power scales with enchantment. A cursed cloak of damage subtracts the same amount instead and can make ordinary hits hurt more.[1]

Generation

It is a repeatable item-level-3 cloak, available in random items and monster possessions, pawn-shop stock and acquirement. Unlike the other ordinary cloaks, a copy created through the normal cloak constructor starts at +2. Its blessing roll and shuffled appearance remain separate from that enchantment.[2]

Ambrosias transforms an essence of earth elemental into a blessed cloak for 400 Au. Its enchantment depends on earlier item generation: it is +6 if no ordinary cloak has yet been constructed in that game, or +2 after any such cloak construction. Constructing even a different cloak type changes the base protection-cloak enchantment that alchemy later copies. Thus the ingredient does not promise +6. This is a static-source finding for 0.90.4, not a tested route for obtaining the higher result.[3]

Protection

Let p be the cloak's enchantment. Wearing it noncursed adds |p| + 1 Protection; wearing it cursed subtracts that amount. Its plus sign alone does not determine whether it helps: blessing determines the direction, while absolute enchantment determines the size.[4]

Enchantment Noncursed contribution Cursed contribution
+0 +1 Protection -1 Protection
+2 or -2 +3 Protection -3 Protection
+6 or -6 +7 Protection -7 Protection

Protection adds directly to Arm, not Def. With no other absorption, a noncursed +2 cloak reduces a ten-point ordinary hit to seven HP; its cursed counterpart makes that hit cost thirteen HP. The ordinary minimum remains one HP, and non-ordinary damage ignores Arm. Body armor's absorption combines with the cloak's contribution.[5]

Protection also helps the resistance check that compares character level, Protection and a random roll against hostile magic strength and another roll. This is an additional chance to resist effects using that check, not universal spell immunity.[6]

Enchantment and strategy

Protection is the cloak whose listed power benefits directly from more enchantment. Even a normal +2 copy gives useful absorption without another investment. Compare it with displacement, which can avoid qualifying melee damage but does not help every follow-up effect, and with negimmunity when life drain is the main danger.

Further enchantment has the ordinary explosion risk; starting at +2 already means a 5% explosion chance at the pre-increase check. Stronger positive blessing does not increase the Protection contribution by itself. A curse reverses an otherwise valuable high-enchantment cloak, so identify it before equipping.[7]

Removing the cloak normally reverses its contribution using its current enchantment. Item damage that merely lowers a worn cloak's pluses does not first recompute the granted Protection, so the displayed enchantment and current contribution can become inconsistent; later removal can leave a residual difference. This source-level interaction has not been tested in play. Do not assume the enchantment table alone reconstructs your whole Protection total after equipment damage.[8]
