An etheric grue is a physically immune, intangible attacker that concentrates its three melee attempts on the head. It is distinct from an elder etheric grue, which has poison attacks but lacks this physical immunity.[2]
Generation
Etheric grues belong to ordinary random-monster pools and a dedicated Astral Plane selection. Ordinary construction gives no fixed item and zero through two random possessions.[3]
Combat and movement
Its sequence consists of a high lunge, a high ordinary attack and another high lunge, each with a raw 0–19 physical damage roll. The lunges receive the level-based hit bonus. It has no defensive action, ranged attack or special power.[4]
The grue's only innate immunity is to normal physical damage. Fire, cold, electricity, poison, fear and sleep are not blocked by that immunity. Intangibility lets it pass through walls and water, but it has no hungry or greedy response that would let an ordinary gift pacify it.[5]
Remains and strategy
Normal death drops possessions and has a 50% chance to leave a dead etheric grue. The remains are inedible and cannot be transformed by alchemy.[6]
Use nonphysical damage or an applicable disabling effect rather than repeatedly swinging an ordinary weapon. High defenses can help against the fixed locations of its three attacks, but cannot make them automatically harmless. Walls and pools cannot be relied upon to separate you from it. Do not transfer the elder grue's poison immunity or feeding response to this species.
