A floating eye is a normally peaceful flying creature with no melee attacks. Its danger is a fireball that can occur while it is wounded and beside you, rather than a paralyzing gaze.[2]
Generation
Floating eyes belong to ordinary random-monster pools, without a named countryside terrain slot or ordinary starting possessions.[3]
Fireball
The eye has an empty melee sequence. Its special action requires adjacency, positive HP and fewer than its original 25 HP. When these conditions hold, it launches a fireball centered on itself, with damage determined by its remaining HP. The effect does not require hostility.[4]
The explosion covers the center and eight surrounding squares. An affected player receives a raw fire-damage roll from 0 to one less than the eye's current HP; affected monsters, including the eye itself, receive separate rolls. This is neither a guaranteed suicide nor an explosion triggered by death. A surviving wounded eye can qualify again. It is immune to sleep, but not fire. Sanctuary suppresses the special action.[5]
Remains
Half of normal deaths leave a dead floating eye. Direct use of an ordinary unblessed eye reveals the map within five squares of a selected location; it does not provide food or detect monsters. At Ambrosias, it instead becomes a blessed potion of levitation for 40 Au, or sells for 6 Au. Transformation replaces the selected stack with one potion.[6]
Strategy
A full-health peaceful eye can usually be left alone. If attacking, avoid leaving it wounded at an adjacent square: a decisive kill or an attack from outside the explosion area avoids its particular retaliation condition. Fire immunity protects against its blast; sleep will not disable it. Decide whether map knowledge or a levitation potion is more useful before consuming its remains.
