A goblin chieftain is a hostile, greedy monster carrying a great-axe. It is stronger than an ordinary goblin and can fire physical missiles as well as fight at close range.[2]
Generation
Chieftains belong to ordinary random-monster pools. They are also specifically selected in the Goblin Caves, with the dedicated population branch becoming more likely as the caves deepen. Ordinary construction gives one neutral +0 great-axe and no additional random treasure.[3]
Combat and movement
A chieftain makes two attacks with raw physical damage of 0–9 and has one defensive action. Its carried axe is not used to calculate this damage. It is immune to fear, but has no other innate immunity. It can open doors and picks up items from the ground while greedy.[4]
Its physical missile has the same raw damage range and uses no ammunition. At ordinary sensing range it may fire from three through nine squares, provided it is awake and hostile, has line of sight and the player is not invisible. Deflection stops a bolt that reaches the player; the attack does not make an ordinary melee hit roll against the player.[5]
At 1–5 HP, its next ordinary pursuit move drops its possessions and begins a faster retreat. This can put the axe on the ground before the chieftain dies.[6]
Gifts and remains
Giving 200 Au at once, or one non-cursed item with at least that much intrinsic value, makes a still-greedy chieftain peaceful and ends its greed. Smaller gifts are kept but do not accumulate toward the threshold. Each accepted gift in this response adds one alignment point. Use the gift's true value, not a shop's sale price.[7]
Normal death drops its possessions and has a 50% chance of leaving a corpse. The body is inedible and has no alchemical transformation; it does not share the ordinary goblin's one-point meal.[8]
Strategy
Check the name before treating a green goblin-like symbol as a weak dagger carrier. Break line of sight or use deflection against its missiles; ordinary doors will not reliably stop pursuit. A 200 Au payment can buy a clean disengagement if still greedy, while a quick kill can provide a useful great-axe. Fear is ineffective, and food has no special pacification role beyond any value it might have as a gift. The chieftain is not the unique Goblin King and does not carry Goblins' Hewer.
