A good fairy is a peaceful flying creature that can grant a wish and restore current HP and mana. It shares its displayed name and yellow-on-white f with the dangerous evil fairy.[2]

Generation

Good fairies can appear in ordinary random-monster pools. They have only one HP, high defense, no possessions and no ordinary attack. They move randomly, fly, have one defense and are immune to fire, cold and sleep.[3]

The wish

The conversation asks four successive confirmations, then reverses the question. Answer yes to the first four and no to the final question asking whether you do not want a wish. This invokes the same normal wish choices as an uncursed wishing scroll. Wishes are selected from exact named choices, not arbitrary item names.[4]

After the conversation, the fairy raises current HP to at least maximum HP and current mana to at least the calculated normal maximum, then vanishes. This recovery also follows refusing an earlier confirmation or answering yes to the final reversed question. It does not increase maximum HP or automatically remove poison and disease. Higher current values, such as mana gained from a Power wish, are preserved.[5]

A fatal wish can end the game before that later recovery occurs. Death and the normal Destruction wish are therefore not rescued by the fairy's healing. Vanishing is not a normal death and does not leave dust or award the creature's kill experience.[6]

Remains and strategy

Normal death has a 50% chance to leave good fairy dust. The dust is inedible and has no alchemical use, making killing the fairy a poor substitute for its conversation.[7]

Prepare a valid wish before talking and pay attention to the reversed final question. The initial name and symbol alone cannot distinguish it from an evil fairy. Ordinary summoning does not offer a reliable choice of the good template, despite older descriptions of repeatable fairy-summoning routes.
