Draft:J. Riley
J. Riley is the proprietor of The Centaur and Nymph, Rampart's tavern. He serves drinks, offers lodging and occasionally brings out a special reserve that can improve Constitution. His hospitality extends to a free pint for a penniless customer, but ordering a round for the house without the money can be fatal.[1]
Meeting Riley
Find the tavern among Rampart's randomly placed shops, then visit between 21:00 and 06:59. Riley interacts through the tavern menu, with one purchase per visit. He is not placed in the room as a creature you can fight or steal from, and the service does not activate in Shadowform.
His menu offers a 1 Au pint of Riley's ultra-dark, a 10 Au shot of Tullimore Dew, a 100 Au round for the house and 25 Au bed and breakfast. The tavern article gives the full services, rumor timing and lodging limitations. The Dew cures poison and disease, but Riley's bed does not directly restore HP, mana or drained attributes.[2]
Hospitality and the special reserve
Riley gives a friendly response if you cannot afford the 1 Au pint, without charging or attempting a rumor. He refuses credit for the Dew and lodging. Ordering a round with less than 100 Au instead draws Riley's right cross, dealing 0-19 unavoidable damage. This is a direct menu penalty, not a monster's attack that can be blocked with armor.
A paid round has a one-in-four chance to prompt an offer of his special reserve. You may decline it. Accepting can raise both current and maximum Constitution by one, with the chance depending on current Constitution: at 12, it is 7/20 per offered drink; at 19 or higher it cannot help. A drained current value can qualify even if your maximum is higher. The other round results involve a rumor, a priest of Dionysus or a bard, as detailed on the tavern page.[2][3]
Strategy
Riley is especially useful as a cheap nighttime source of poison and disease treatment. Carry 10 Au for the Dew and learn the tavern's location before an emergency. His willingness to give away a pint does not extend to free cures, free lodging or an unpaid round.
Buy rounds for the encounters and an occasional Constitution gain, not guaranteed training. At current Constitution 12, the chance of a gain is 7/80 per paid round if you accept every reserve offer. Repeated paid pints are the cheaper rumor option when their hour restriction allows a new attempt.
