A jotun is a heavily defended giant with two high attacks and a physical missile attack. It is the last ordinary species in the fixed Arena sequence before the championship encounter.[2]
Generation
Jotuns appear in ordinary random-monster pools. A normal specimen carries a neutral +0 giant club and zero through four extra random possessions. The fixed Arena jotun follows the jabberwock.[3]
| Form | HP | Hit | Raw attack damage | Fixed giant club |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary | 750 | 80 | 0–199 | Yes |
| Arena | 840 | 160 | 0–299 | No |
The Arena constructor creates neither the ordinary fixed club nor random possessions. Its named opponent leaves a head on normal death; ordinary jotuns do so half the time.[4]
Description
The jotun has two high physical attacks and one defense. Its ranged physical missiles have the same raw damage upper bound as its melee: 200 ordinarily. Normal ranged distances are three through nine, with the Arena's enhanced awareness allowing greater reach. Its carried club does not change these attacks into the player's weapon routine.[5]
It is immune to cold and fear, but not sleep. It cannot fly or swim. Distant rumbling messages are flavor for its size and do not cause an actual earthquake or terrain damage.[6]
The greedy response accepts a single gift worth at least 900 Au to remove hostility. Greed takes priority over hunger, so ordinary cheap food does not work as a separate feeding shortcut. Its head is inedible and has no alchemical transformation.[7]
Strategy
Its slow interval offers preparation time, but both melee and missiles can hit extremely hard. A terrain barrier helps limit movement without necessarily blocking the missile line. Sleep or other applicable disabling effects avoid its cold and fear immunities.
The fixed Arena encounter is considerably stronger than an ordinary jotun and does not award the fixed club. A sufficiently valuable gift is an alternative to combat where the ordinary gift interaction is available, but its high price should be weighed against the expected danger and reward.
