Large round shield is a shield with a three-point base defense bonus, issued to newly registered gladiators. In the infobox, p is the individual shield's enchantment.[1]

Generation

Large round shield can be found among randomly generated treasure, including the random possessions of treasure-bearing monsters, and may appear in Knight's Pawn Shop. A noncursed acquirement effect can create shields; a blessed effect lets you select this type, but the resulting item's blessing and enchantment still follow its own generation rules.[2][3][4][5]

It is not part of Julie's fixed stock.[6]

Registering as a gladiator at the Rampart Coliseum gives an uncursed +0 large round shield along with a club and gym credit. You need Strength 13 and Agility 12 and cannot be a current Legion or Order member. Registration supplies the shield before any Arena victory; it is not automatically fully identified.[7]

Description

In the Shield slot, it adds 3 + enchantment to defense. It does not add normal-damage absorption or require a matching block to supply that bonus. You can use a shield alongside a two-handed weapon in 0.90.4 because the Shield slot is separate from both hand slots. Its weight still counts toward burden.[8][9][10]

The shield has no additional worn magical power. Its name reveals the type, but not a random copy's enchantment or curse. Negative enchantment reduces its bonus and can make the net contribution negative; a cursed shield cannot be normally swapped out once in use. Use identification before trying an uncertain find.[11][12][13][14]

Strategy

The Arena's free +0 shield is a useful early addition and does not require winning a fight. Register only if that career suits your character, because it conflicts with the Legion and Order. A heater shield gains just one defense for another 100 weight; a strongly enchanted large shield can be the better actual item. Two-handed weapons can still be used with it.

Compare all shields and defense, absorption and tactical blocking before treating a higher base bonus as an automatic upgrade.
