An outer circle demon is a fire-attacking demon that can cast spells, cause fear and summon reinforcements when badly wounded. It is one of the ordinary demons encountered in the deep Astral Plane.[2]
Generation
It can appear in ordinary random pools and the deep Astral Plane's special table. A wounded inner circle demon can summon two. It begins hostile and carries a neutral +0 estoc, with no extra random possessions.[3]
Description
It makes one fire lunge for raw damage 0–19 and has three defenses. It can open doors and is immune to fire, poison, fear and sleep. It has no normal ranged poison attack: the assigned poison melee action cannot execute at the distances used for ranged combat.[4]
Its nearby demonic action can cause fear or attempt level-5 spellcasting, using the twelve-option range ending with item destruction. The fear attempt requires sight and an eligible unafraid player; fear immunity blocks it, and players of level 19 or higher cannot be newly frightened by this branch. Spellcasting itself requires hostility and sight.[5]
At 2–24 HP, the same special action reduces its HP to 1 and tries to summon two hostile lesser frost demons beside the player. The summoning needs free adjacent floor, does not require the original demon to be hostile, and can recur if it later heals into the triggering range.[6]
Remains and strategy
Normal death has a 50% chance to leave a poisonous corpse with no alchemical use. Its estoc is ordinary loot; the demon does not apply the player's estoc routine to its fire attack.[7]
Fire immunity answers the melee attack but not the varied spells. Finish a wounded demon promptly when possible: leaving it barely alive gives its summoning response an opportunity. Cold, electricity and ordinary physical attacks avoid its innate immunities, while sleep and poison do not.
