Draft:Ring of poison resistance

A ring of poison resistance normally grants poison immunity while worn and clears existing poisoning when equipped. A cursed ring of poison instead removes existing poison immunity and applies a large poison load. Its curse-removal interaction can leave protection missing even after the ring becomes noncursed.[1]

Generation

It is an item-level-4 random ring, available in ordinary loot, pawn-shop stock and acquirement, with the ordinary randomized appearance, enchantment and blessing.[2]

Ambrosias offers three blessed-ring recipes. Their differing enchantments do not increase poison protection.[3]

Ingredient Price Result
Wyvern's sting 300 Au Blessed +5 ring
Unicorn's horn 1000 Au Blessed +7 ring
King wyvern's sting 100 Au Blessed +9 ring

Description

Noncursed equipping adds one poison-immunity contribution and clears all current poison counts. A positive immunity total prevents ordinary new poisoning and poison-type HP damage. Enchantment and positive blessing magnitude do not strengthen it, and equipping it does not automatically identify the ring.[4]

Cursed equipping first clears all poison immunity, including other sources, then adds 100 poison counts. Untreated poison attempts three HP damage per minute-status update, so this adds 300 damage over its full course if nothing heals, cures or protects you. Existing poison counts are not replaced; the new load adds to them. Armor does not absorb this damage.[5]

Curse and removal interaction

Whenever this ring's worn effect is removed, it clears current poisoning and subtracts one immunity contribution, even if the ring was cursed and never added that contribution. With a normal noncursed ring and otherwise unchanged totals, this removes its protection as expected.[6]

However, blessing and self-targeted dispelling remove and reapply a worn effect around a curse change. Following cursed use, that sequence can take poison immunity from zero to minus one, then back to zero when the now-noncursed ring is reapplied. Zero gives no poison immunity. It also does not restore the other sources that cursed use cleared. This follows the current source; the interaction has not been tested in play.[7]

Strategy

A known noncursed ring offers both a full poison cure on equipping and continued prevention. Preserve suitable remains for alchemy when you lack that protection, but do not pay more merely for a larger plus: all three recipes give the same poison power. Eating a unicorn horn has a separate immunity effect and does not clear existing poison, so compare that alternative before consuming it in alchemy.[8]

Never test an unknown ring by relying on poison immunity already supplied elsewhere. After a cursed-ring incident, treat the poison urgently and verify the resulting immunity, for example with self-knowledge, before assuming that the ring's new curse label means it is protecting you. Simply repeating removal and equipping is not a demonstrated repair for the contribution imbalance.[9]
