A ring of protection adds Protection, improving ordinary damage absorption and certain resistance checks. Its benefit scales with absolute enchantment. A cursed ring of vulnerability subtracts the same amount, potentially increasing ordinary damage taken.[1]

Generation

It is an item-level-4 random ring, available in ordinary loot, pawn-shop stock and acquirement. Ordinary noncursed copies start at +1 or higher; cursed copies start at -2 or lower. These signs result from construction, but blessing remains what determines the direction of its power.[2]

Description

For enchantment P, a noncursed ring adds |P| + 1 Protection; a cursed ring subtracts that amount. Removal reverses the contribution using the ring's current enchantment. Stronger positive blessing does not itself increase the bonus, and wearing the ring does not automatically identify its type.[3]

Enchantment Noncursed Cursed
+0 +1 Protection -1 Protection
+1 or -1 +2 Protection -2 Protection
+2 or -2 +3 Protection -3 Protection
+7 or -7 +8 Protection -8 Protection

Protection adds to Arm, not Def. Ordinary damage subtracts Arm and still inflicts at least one HP; other damage types do not use this absorption. Thus, with no other armor, +3 Protection changes a ten-point ordinary hit to seven damage, while -3 changes it to thirteen. Multiple worn protection rings and a protection cloak add their contributions.[4]

Protection also improves the resistance check used by some hostile magic. This is a chance to resist those effects, not general magic immunity. The cursed name does not mean it applies the separate Vulnerable status; this ring specifically lowers Protection.[5]

Strategy

Even an ordinary noncursed +1 copy provides two points of absorption. This makes it a useful general defense against ordinary attacks, while dedicated immunity rings address particular damage types. It will not absorb poison damage or make direct unstoppable damage harmless.[6]

Further enchantment improves the bonus, but risks destroying a ring with an already high positive enchantment. Compare the old value before enchanting; +1 passes the explosion check safely, while +2 has a 5% explosion chance. Uncurse a harmful copy using the appropriate strength of blessing or dispelling before relying on it as protection.[7]

Item damage that reduces a worn ring's positive enchantment does not first remove its old Protection contribution. Later removal can therefore leave a residual difference. This is a source-level interaction, not a tested benefit: the current enchantment alone may not reconstruct the entire Protection total after equipment damage.[8]
