A sandman is a flying monster whose touch can put the player to sleep. It is immune to both ordinary physical damage and sleep, so its low health does not make ordinary weapon attacks an effective answer.[2]
Generation
Sandmen can appear in ordinary random encounters. They begin hostile and carry zero or one random possession, with no fixed item.[3]
Description
The sandman has one physical attack, with raw damage 0–19, and no defensive actions. Each successful hit has a 70% chance to attempt sleep lasting 2–15 minute-status checks. Sleep immunity blocks the effect, and an already sleeping player does not receive a longer duration. Armor or displacement blocking direct damage does not independently stop the sleep check.[4]
It has no ranged or special attack. It flies but is not intangible, and has no hungry or greedy response. A normal death has a 50% chance to leave an inedible mound of sand with no alchemical use.[5]
Strategy
Use elemental damage or another applicable nonphysical effect. Sleep protection prevents lost actions but does not make an ordinary physical weapon capable of harming the sandman. Its flight also prevents water from serving as a reliable barrier; walls remain useful because it cannot pass through them.
