Self knowledge is a spell that reports your score, alignment description, active conditions, immunities and organizational standing. It supplies information about the character; it does not cure the conditions it reports.[1]
Learning
Joining Druidism as a lay devotee teaches self knowledge together with monster detection. Pray at a Druid altar with no current priesthood and alignment strictly between -10 and +10. Visiting the Archdruid can help with alignment, but his conversation is not itself the act of joining.[2]
Other learning routes are random research, a Knowledge wish that selects the spell, and identified Kolwynia.[3]
Effects
The initial cost is 10 mana. Casting opens a sequence of reports. The alignment report uses descriptive bands rather than giving the exact signed alignment number; conditions are listed by name rather than remaining duration. Immunities are reported separately from conditions, and the rank displays include guild experience where the report provides it.[4]
The report is a snapshot. It neither identifies the items responsible for an immunity nor promises that a temporary effect will last through the next encounter. A listed immunity also does not protect against every similarly named attack: for example, negative-energy immunity has specific limits.
Strategy
Use self knowledge after an unfamiliar effect or before a dangerous expedition to check which protections are actually active. It can also help distinguish being near Neutral from strongly aligned, though descriptive alignment bands do not replace the exact admission rules of a religion or guild.
Because another reading of unchanged conditions gives little new information, save mana by consulting it after a meaningful change. Noncursed scrolls provide the same report without learning the spell, and a noncursed ring of self-knowledge is another reusable source. None of these removes a curse or an ailment.[5]
