A sheep is a normally peaceful animal, displayed as a white s. It is found in villages and the countryside, and can leave a side of mutton when killed.[2]
Generation
Sheep belong to the ordinary random-monster pools. They are explicitly included in mountain encounters, including the corresponding pass and volcano terrain tables, and are placed at sheep positions in villages. A sheep has no starting equipment or random treasure.[3]
Behavior and remains
A sheep is not initially hostile and can swim. Its normal movement is random rather than pursuit; it still needs a movement-triggering state, such as wandering or hostility, to move during ordinary monster actions. Once hostile and adjacent, it can attempt one low attack and one defensive block.[4]
The sheep's raw physical roll is zero, but a successful hit against a non-immune player still causes one HP of damage. It has no ranged attack or special ability. Ordinary animal conversation is only a joke about animals being unable to speak; it does not provide trade or pacification.[5]
A normal death has a 50% chance to leave a side of mutton. Eating it adds six food-reserve points; normal hourly hunger checks consume one point. The remains have no alchemical transformation. Sheep are not initially hungry, so the existence of edible mutton does not mean a living sheep can be pacified by offering food.[6]
Strategy
A sheep's five HP and weak attack make it less dangerous prey than a deer or elephant, without sacrificing nutrition per corpse. Mutton is still only a chance drop, so do not spend your last safe turns expecting every kill to produce a meal. Peaceful sheep can simply be left alone; food offerings are not needed to stop an attack that has not begun.
