A thieve's pick, also called a lockpick, is a reusable tool for unlocking adjacent doors. Joining the Thieves' Guild supplies one, but a character outside the guild can use an identified pick.[1]

Generation

A pick can occur as an item-level-2 random miscellaneous item, in pawn-shop stock, or through acquirement. A master thief carries one. Successful guild enrollment grants a pick and Object Detection; see the guild for alignment and dues requirements.[2]

Picking a lock

Activate the pick as an item, then choose the direction of a closed, revealed door. An unknown pick is unusable without a Thieves' Guild rank. Passing that initial check identifies the pick's type. Success unlocks the door without opening it and awards the greater of three experience or the current depth. Neither success nor failure consumes the tool; blessing and enchantment do not affect its chance.[3]

Let S = Dexterity + character level + 10 × thief rank − 2 × depth. The success chance is S/50, bounded between zero and one. The special floor at depth one below the dungeon's maximum rejects lockpicking outright. An undiscovered secret door is not a valid target.[4]

Strategy

A pick is economical when you can afford repeated attempts. Higher Dexterity, level and thief rank improve it, while deeper locks are harder. Attempts are actions, so repeated failure is dangerous near enemies. A magic key is lighter and opens a valid lock reliably, including the special lock that defeats the pick, but is consumed after its available uses. Identification lets nonmembers use a found pick without paying guild dues.[5]
