A trout is a normally peaceful, strictly aquatic fish, displayed as a cyan t. It has no tactical attacks and can leave a filet of trout.[2]

Generation

Trout belong to the ordinary random pools and are explicitly included in river encounters. Countryside encounter construction changes an exclusively swimming creature's initial tile to water. Ordinary trout have no possessions.[3]

Behavior and remains

A trout's normal movement is restricted to water tiles. It cannot follow a player across dry floor. Its defense score is 18, despite having just three HP; defense affects the chance to hit rather than absorbing damage. Even a hostile trout has no attacks, blocks, ranged effect or special ability in its normal combat sequence.[4]

The filet has a 50% chance to appear on normal death. Eating it adds six food-reserve points, with one point consumed by a normal hourly hunger check. It has no alchemical transformation. A living trout has no initial hunger flag and does not accept food through the ordinary pacification response.[5]

Strategy

A trout cannot retaliate with a normal tactical attack, but its high defense can make it slower to kill than its HP suggests. A striped bass has the same nutrition and much lower HP and defense. In either case, do not trade safe footing for a possible meal: the fish's inability to attack does not protect the player from the water tile or other creatures nearby. Normal movement keeps the fish in water, so it is not necessary to chase it onto land to escape it.
