A walking stick is an ordinary wand with no magical effect. It can have charges and enchantment, but activating it only wastes a charge and an action. It is a different item from the quarterstaff weapon.[1]
Generation
Its item level is zero, the lowest among ordinary wands. A walking-stick candidate passes the ordinary item-level filter about 67% of the time at generation level zero and always at higher generation levels; this is not its overall drop rate. Normal construction gives 1–20 charges, random blessing and +0 enchantment. It can occur in random loot, pawn-shop stock or acquirement. Like other wands, it receives a shuffled appearance each game; an unimpressive appearance does not specifically identify a walking stick.[2]
Description
| Condition | Activation |
|---|---|
| At least one charge | Spends one charge, does nothing, and does not identify the type |
| No positive charge | Reports no power; does not reach the item's effect |
There is no target prompt. Blessing, curse and enchantment do not change the empty effect. Fear still prevents the ordinary activation command, and failed or ineffective use still takes the command's action time.[3]
Recharging or enchanting a walking stick can increase its charges but cannot give it a magical power. It retains the wand category's breakage risk, so it is not a sensible substitute for a proper digging tool merely because its magical effect is empty.[4]
Strategy
Once identified, keep it out of the inventory slots reserved for emergency wands. Spending more charges on repeated tests will not discover a hidden power. Conversely, one uneventful activation does not prove that an unknown object is a walking stick: an empty wand or an unsuccessful dispel can also accomplish nothing. Use identification to establish the actual type before deciding what to sell or discard.[5]
