A great-axe is a heavy, two-handed cutting weapon with a high ordinary damage rating for its price. Goblins' Hewer also appears unidentified as a great-axe, but is a separate named weapon.[1]

Generation

Julie's sells a fully identified, uncursed +0 great-axe for 400 Au. It is part of the fixed stock, so a new character with enough money need not reach a deep dungeon to buy it. Random treasure, the pawn shop and acquirement provide other sources; item level 5 matters to ordinary random acceptance.[2]

A goblin chieftain begins with the ordinary +0 weapon. This is not the Goblin King's named Goblins' Hewer. The initial possession is copied directly from its definition and can be recovered with dropped monster possessions.[3]

Description

The great-axe must occupy both hand slots to be wielded. The shield has its own slot and can still supply defense; the hand requirement costs access to the ready hand, not the shield. Packing or exchanging the axe clears both hand references to the same copy.[4]

Its normal cut gains the Strength damage bonus, and a lunge is available. Damage is ordinary physical damage; 24 is a weapon contribution, not a guaranteed hit or a means of bypassing immunity. The weight can also affect the character's carrying burden and speed.[5]

Throwing and tunneling are possible. The ordinary thrown-weapon branch uses current character combat values, so a spare great-axe is not inherently a 24-damage projectile. Tunneling uses its base damage but can damage the axe. A cursed wielded copy cannot simply be packed or thrown away.[6]

Strategy

Compared with an equally enchanted great-sword, it adds four damage points at the same +7 hit, costs 400 Au less at Julie's, and weighs 25 more. That is a strong purchase when burden is manageable. Against a katana, it gains eight damage points but loses three points of accuracy and the ready hand. A character missing frequently may benefit more from accuracy than from another large damage rating.[7]

Inspect an unknown great-axe before treating it as this item. Goblins' Hewer has different weight, damage and initial enchantment. Neither its name nor this axe's two-hand display supplies a duplication method; see the older advice discussion for the limits of those historical reports.
