A great-sword is a two-handed cutting weapon. It delivers more base damage than the common one-handed swords, with lower accuracy and greater weight. The unidentified name is also used by the separate cursed weapon Desecrator.[1]

Generation

Julie's sells an identified, uncursed +0 great-sword for 800 Au. Random treasure, pawn-shop stock and acquirement are other sources; its item level 5 makes it less common in shallow random loot, without imposing a wielding requirement.[2]

Guardsmen and rakshasas begin with an ordinary +0 great-sword copied from the item definition. Their weapon is carried treasure, recoverable when dropped; it is not the source of all their monster combat statistics. Stealing from guards follows the city's special enforcement rules, so a guard is not a risk-free source of a free sword.[3]

Description

To wield it, the great-sword must occupy both weapon hand and ready hand. Merely carrying it in one hand does not activate its bonuses. The shield uses a separate slot and can still contribute defense. Taking or packing the sword removes both hand references to the same item; they are not two copies.[4]

Its usual attack is a Strength-assisted cut; it can also lunge. Ordinary physical immunity still applies. Desecrator's alignment-dependent attacks do not belong to the common sword, and neither the shared appearance nor a high enchantment establishes that identity.[5]

Throwing is possible, but ordinary throws depend on current character combat values rather than independently adding the projectile's listed damage. Tunneling uses the cutting-weapon branch and can damage it. A cursed sword in use cannot simply be packed or thrown away.[6]

Strategy

The strongest comparison is the great-axe: at equal enchantment it has the same +7 hit and four more damage points, costs half as much at Julie's, but weighs 25 more. The sword earns its place when that weight difference matters or when the actual sword has better enchantment. Compare carried load as well as damage; extra weight can slow an expedition.

Against a katana, the great-sword gains four damage points but loses three points of accuracy and the ready hand. A two-handed weapon does not grant extra combat actions or require giving up your shield. A safe sword already obtained from loot can be worth keeping, but do not fight the city's guards solely to avoid its purchase price.[7]
