A food ration is the dependable portable meal sold by Commandant Sonder's. Eating one adds eight food points. It is cheap and readily purchased, but much heavier than most other foods.[1]
Generation and purchase
Sonder sells rations for 5 Au each, around the clock, in any affordable quantity you request. Buying supplies does not eat them. The service appears in Rampart, in villages and through a countryside fast-food event. The ration's base value of 2 Au is not its fixed retail price.[2]
Rations also occur as item-level-0 random food, possible pawn-shop stock, and through acquirement. Ordinary generation produces an unblessed copy.[3]
Description
One ration adds eight to your reserve, with a minimum resulting reserve of zero if you were deeply starving. To avoid overeating, eat it at a reserve of 40 or below. At more than 48 after a meal, you vomit and fall to 12. Blessing or cursing the ration does not change its nourishment.[4]
The safe ration's initial appearance is a red and white striped bucket. A poisoned ration is a separate item whose unidentified appearance is food ration; the two should not be confused. Random unpleasant taste messages from the safe meal do not indicate poisoning.[5]
Ordinary hungry non-horse creatures can accept a ration through feeding. A horse requires grain instead, and a greedy or needy creature may evaluate the ration as treasure before considering food.[6]
Strategy
Buy a small reserve before travelling, then adjust it to the distance and your carrying capacity. Ten rations weigh 200: purchasing a huge stock can turn a food problem into a load problem. A pizza supplies the same nourishment at one tenth of the weight, while a nutritab packs much more into one weight unit.
Do not eat a ration immediately after a Diner meal. The Diner sets reserve to 44, and adding eight causes vomiting. Buy portable food for later rather than treating every purchase as a reason to eat.[7]
