A katana is a one-handed cutting weapon that combines a damage rating of 16 with better accuracy than the ordinary bastard sword. It is expensive, but its benefit does not depend on a special character class or weapon-skill progression.[1]
Generation
A fully identified, uncursed +0 katana costs 1,000 Au at Julie's. Item level 4 does not impose a shop-purchase or wielding requirement; the fixed stock is available whenever the shop is open and the character can pay.[2]
Katanas also occur through ordinary random treasure, the pawn shop and acquirement. The random constructor determines blessing and enchantment; an expensive find is not automatically safe to wield.[3]
Description
The katana's ordinary cut adds the Strength damage bonus. It can also lunge, and its saved attack sequence follows the same rules as other melee weapons. Its +10 hit is a contribution to the character's attack value, not a hit percentage. The katana has no independent critical-hit bonus: normal attacks use the shared critical and lunar damage rules.[4]
It needs only the weapon hand, leaving the ready hand available. It deals normal physical damage, so a highly enchanted katana can still fail against an immune opponent. It can be thrown or used to tunnel; ordinary throws use current character combat values, and cutting-weapon tunneling risks damaging the blade.[5]
Strategy
At equal enchantment, the katana improves on a bastard sword by two points of accuracy with identical damage, weight and hand use. That is useful against hard-to-hit targets, but not always worth an extra 500 Au when an existing sword is already reliable. Healing, escape resources or armor may address a more immediate weakness.
A great-axe costs only 400 Au at Julie's and adds eight damage points, but loses three points of accuracy, doubles the weight and occupies both hands. A great-sword likewise trades accuracy and hand use for more damage. Choose the katana when accurate one-handed cuts matter more than maximum raw damage; do not assume the highest price identifies the best weapon for every character.[6]
