A bastard sword is a high-damage, one-handed cutting weapon. It leaves the ready hand available, but an unidentified weapon with this name deserves particular caution: Demonblade initially looks like a bastard sword too.[1]
Generation
Julie's sells the ordinary sword fully identified, uncursed and +0 for 500 Au. Its fixed stock provides a dependable way to obtain the ordinary item without trying an unknown dungeon find.[2]
Random treasure and pawn-shop stock can produce it, with item level 3 influencing ordinary generation. Acquirement can also supply it; a blessed acquirement permits exact selection but does not guarantee that the generated sword is blessed.[3]
Description
Selecting a normal attack with this sword produces a cut, benefiting from Strength. It also permits lunges. The extra damage comes at lower accuracy than lighter blades; enchantment adds to both the sword's hit and damage contributions. Changing weapons does not automatically replace previously saved combat actions.[4]
The ordinary sword neither causes berserk rage nor drains a victim's life. Those belong to Demonblade's separate behavior. Wielding Demonblade reveals it and imposes berserk, while its curse makes removal difficult; trying an unidentified bastard sword is therefore a poor identification method. The ordinary sword can itself be cursed, independently of that identity confusion.[5]
It can be thrown and can tunnel, following ordinary throwing and cutting-weapon tunneling rules. Neither use gives it Demonblade's powers.[6]
Strategy
The bastard sword is a middle option between the cheaper broad sword and the more accurate katana. The following comparison assumes Julie's uncursed +0 copies; all three use one hand.[7]
| Weapon | Shop price | Hit | Damage rating | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Broad sword | 180 Au | +9 | 12 | 40 |
| Bastard sword | 500 Au | +8 | 16 | 50 |
| Katana | 1,000 Au | +10 | 16 | 50 |
Buy it when the four-point damage increase matters more than the lost point of accuracy and the price. Paying twice as much for a katana buys two points of accuracy, not more base damage. A safely identified enchanted bastard sword can consequently remain useful long after a plain katana becomes affordable. Preserve it for combat rather than exposing an expensive blade to unnecessary tunneling failures.
