A rakshasa is a hostile illusionist that can look like another monster while retaining its own attacks, immunities and possessions. Its remains grant temporary true sight.[2]
Generation
Rakshasas belong to ordinary random-monster pools and dedicated selections in the Astral Plane and HellWell Volcano. Ordinary construction supplies a neutral +0 great-sword and zero through three additional random possessions.[3]
Illusions and attacks
On a special-action call without true sight, it has a one-in-five chance to borrow another monster template's displayed name and symbol. Historical NPC templates are excluded. This changes appearance, not the rakshasa's HP, attacks, loot or immunities. True sight causes the ability to restore its genuine name and symbol.[4]
It makes two physical lunges for a raw 0–19 damage each, with level-based hit bonuses, and has two defensive actions. Its fire bolt uses a raw 0–19 roll, with ordinary ranged opportunities from distance three through nine. It opens doors and is immune to fire, fear and sleep, but not ordinary physical damage, cold or electricity.[5]
Remains
Normal death drops its possessions and has a 50% chance to leave a dead rakshasa. Eating the ordinary corpse adds one through ten true-sight counts, instead of food. These normally expire at ten-minute game-time status checks. The corpse has no alchemical transformation.[6]
Strategy
Judge an apparent transformation cautiously: a frightening borrowed name does not give this creature the copied monster's strength, and a harmless-looking image does not remove its fire bolt. True sight helps reveal its identity. Cold, electricity and physical attacks are applicable, whereas sleep and fear are ineffective.
The ordinary great-sword is a real carried item regardless of the current illusion. Keep the corpse when temporary true sight is useful, but do not expect normal corpse nutrition from eating it.
