Invisibility is a spell that interferes with monster pursuit and the ordinary ranged-strike decision. Adjacent monsters and special attacks can still threaten an invisible character.[1]
Learning
Set teaches invisibility on initial acceptance as a lay follower, and again at Priest rank. Joining requires no existing priesthood and negative alignment. The Thieves' Guild teaches it when an Apprentice becomes a ranking Thief at 1,500 guild XP.[2]
Alongside these fixed sources, invisibility is in the common random research and Knowledge-wish pools, and is taught by identified Kolwynia.[3]
Effects
For an initial 15 mana, each cast adds two ten-minute status updates of invisibility, roughly twenty minutes under ordinary local timekeeping. Recasting adds duration. See temporary effects for timing boundaries.[1][4]
Several pursuit routines replace directed movement with random movement when you are invisible. The ordinary monster turn also skips its distant ranged-strike branch. These checks do not make you untouchable: adjacent hostile monsters can still enter melee, and the nearby special-action check does not require you to be visible. Invisibility also does not prevent a nearby sleeping monster from waking.[5]
Strategy
Cast before an approach or while there is still space between you and your pursuers. Disrupted pursuit can help create a route out, but walking next to a hostile monster is still dangerous. Treat invisibility as help with positioning, not as sanctuary or damage immunity.
The fixed Set and thieves' routes make this a more predictable acquisition than waiting for random research. A potion of invisibility supplies the same kind of protection without spending spell mana, and stronger blessing can extend its duration. Keep an actual escape option for opponents whose special attacks remain effective.
