| Learning | Athena Acolyte; general spell learning |
Sanctuary is a spell that establishes a protected position at your current square. It stops the normal monster melee, ranged-strike and special-action routes while you stand there, but prevents you from initiating ordinary melee as well.[1]
Learning
Athena teaches sanctuary at Acolyte rank, together with healing. Promotion requires the preceding rank, 400 priesthood XP and the faith's alignment condition.[2]
It also belongs to the common random research and Knowledge-wish pools, and is taught by identified Kolwynia. Learning it through these routes does not require Athena worship.[3]
Effects
The initial cost is 75 mana. Outside a temple environment, the spell records the square where you stand as the sanctuary. There is no timer and no patron requirement for this spell-created protection. It does not create an altar or change the terrain beneath you.[1]
| Action or condition | Result |
|---|---|
| Remain on the recorded square | Normal monster melee, ranged strikes and special actions are blocked |
| Walk away | Protection is absent on the other square |
| Return to the recorded square on the same level | Protection applies again |
| Cast sanctuary elsewhere | The new square replaces the old one |
| Change level or environment | The recorded sanctuary is cleared |
| Cast inside a temple environment | No sanctuary is created; mana is still spent |
The protection depends on position, with separate resets on level and environment changes. Standing on your own patron's altar can also satisfy the sanctuary check, independently of this spell.[4]
You cannot start an ordinary melee attack from sanctuary. Spellcasting is not prohibited by sanctuary itself, though fear and insufficient mana still prevent it. The spell is not a general damage-immunity effect: terrain, existing poison and other effects outside the blocked monster attack routes can still hurt you.[5]
Strategy
Choose safe terrain before spending the large initial cost. Sanctuary can provide a position for recovery or magical attacks, but walking off it to chase an opponent gives up protection at once. It is poorly suited to a plan that depends on repeated melee attacks from the same square.
Athena grants the spell relatively early, but an early character may lack the mana to cast it. A reduced recorded cost or favorable lunar influence can change its affordability. Do not plan on casting it inside an enemy temple, and remember that warping clears the recorded position.
