A morning-star is a one-handed striking weapon with a high ordinary damage rating. An unidentified morning-star may instead be firestar, a separate weapon whose fire effects do not belong to the common item.[1]
Generation
Julie's sells an identified, uncursed +0 morning-star for 300 Au. Its item level 5 does not restrict shop purchase. Random treasure and pawn-shop stock can contain it, and acquirement can produce it with independently generated blessing and enchantment.[2]
Description
Its usual attack is a strike, adding the Strength damage bonus. It can also lunge, and its enchantment contributes to both hit and damage while wielded. It deals normal physical damage and has no automatic fireball, fire resistance or spiked-weapon critical bonus.[3]
Those fire properties distinguish firestar: its attack can trigger a fireball and its equipment effect grants fire resistance. Establish an unknown weapon's identity rather than assuming it is the safe plain weapon because the displayed name is familiar.[4]
The morning-star can tunnel without the cutting or thrusting weapon's tunneling-damage check. This protection applies to that check, not other damage sources. It can also be thrown; a spare copy does not add its printed damage as an independent projectile bonus.[5]
Strategy
The morning-star is a relatively inexpensive way to obtain 16 base damage without using both hands. Against an equally enchanted bastard sword, it has the same damage, one fewer point of accuracy and ten more weight, but costs 200 Au less and is safer for tunneling. The normal cut and strike receive the same Strength bonus.[6]
Compared with a war-hammer, it improves damage by two and hit by one, for ten more weight and a 180 Au higher shop price. Compared with a mace, it trades one point of accuracy for four damage points. Choose it for affordable striking damage when its burden and accuracy fit the character; physical immunity still calls for another answer.
