A staff of firebolts fires a single fire projectile. Its damage is fixed by the staff's power rather than its enchantment, while accuracy depends on the user's Dexterity and level.[1]
Generation
It is an item-level-3 random wand, normally with 1–20 charges, random blessing and +0 enchantment. Random loot, pawn-shop stock and acquirement can supply it.[2]
Description
| Property | Effect |
|---|---|
| Hit rating against a creature | 2 × current Dexterity + player level, tested against its defense |
| Damage on a hit | Random 0–74 fire damage; fire immunity applies |
| Positive blessing or enchantment | No increase in damage, accuracy or range |
| Curse | Forces the endpoint back onto the user after targeting |
The projectile travels to the first obstruction or the selected square. It does not pass through a missed creature to attack another. The hit roll always succeeds on a natural zero and fails on a natural nineteen; other rolls succeed when below hit rating minus defense. One charge is spent before aiming, and the type is revealed even if the shot achieves nothing.[3]
A bolt that ends on an unoccupied ordinary hedge burns it away; a trifid absorbs it instead. At an unoccupied water endpoint it turns the water into floor. If a creature occupies the endpoint, the creature branch is handled instead of these terrain changes.[4]
Self-targeting, including cursed use, attempts the same random fire damage against the player. Active deflection makes this bolt miss the player; otherwise fire immunity can prevent the damage. Neither is a refund of the charge. For cancellation, follow the wand targeting warning rather than assuming Escape reverses activation.[5]
Strategy
The staff offers substantial single-target fire damage without spending mana. It is useful when fire is effective and you have a clear line, but the first creature or obstruction can intercept the shot. A high-enchantment copy does not hit harder; recharge for additional uses rather than expecting enchantment to raise damage.
Choose another damage type against fire-immune creatures such as a fire elemental. The staff can clear an ordinary hedge or a selected water square as a tool, but cannot remove a trifid. Keep it distinct from a fireball wand: the bolt does not create a nine-square explosion around its endpoint.[6]
