Uncut diamonds are valuables worth 2,000 Au at base value, initially described as some rocks. They have no activation effect: their importance is as loot to sell or give away.[1]
Generation
Diamonds occur as item-level-4 random miscellaneous items, possible pawn-shop stock, and acquirement results. Their high level makes them less likely to pass shallow loot checks, but does not absolutely exclude them there.[2]
Value and use
The sale prices below assume a noncursed copy; both buyers refuse cursed items.
Identify the diamonds before selling them. An unknown miscellaneous item is valued at only 1 Au by the ordinary appraisal routine; knowing the type restores their full 2,000 Au value. The pawn shop pays 1,000 Au per identified copy; the guild fence quotes 1,333 Au for one. Blessing and enchantment do not raise their true value.[3]
For gifts, a creature that evaluates treasure uses the real value even if you have not identified it. Giving diamonds away therefore spends real treasure, rather than a worthless handful of rocks.[4]
Strategy
Diamonds carry 100 Au of base value per weight unit. They are much more efficient loot than a gold ingot, but less efficient than an emerald or bearer bonds. Keep suspicious rocks for identification when you have room; do not sell them blindly or use them as a casual gift.
