| Cursed name | Wand of fireballs |
A wand of fireballs launches a fire explosion over a nine-square area. It attacks groups and changes some terrain, but an intercepted or self-directed shot can burn its user as well.[1]
Generation
This item-level-5 random wand normally has 1–20 charges, random blessing and +0 enchantment. It can appear in random loot, pawn-shop stock or acquirement.[2]
Ambrosias transforms essence of fire elemental into a blessed +6 wand with 20 charges for normally 400 Au. Neither the blessing nor +6 enchantment raises the fireball's damage. This is an alchemical product rather than fixed carried loot.[3]
Description
| Property | Rule |
|---|---|
| Area | Selected or intercepted endpoint and eight surrounding squares |
| Damage | Independent random 0–34 fire damage per affected creature or player |
| Defense | No hit roll; fire immunity applies, but bolt deflection does not |
| Positive blessing or enchantment | Does not change the area or damage |
| Curse | Forces the explosion to center on the player |
The projectile stops on a creature or other obstruction. The resulting explosion then checks all nine squares without an additional line-of-fire test between its center and each affected square. It can therefore hit unintended occupants, not just the creature you selected.[4]
Within the blast, ordinary hedges become floor and water is vaporized into floor. A trifid absorbs the hedge-destruction effect. The fireball checks terrain after occupants, so its terrain changes can occur even at an occupied square. These changes differ from the more limited endpoint terrain handling of a firebolt.[5]
Activation reveals the type and spends one charge before aiming. Cursed aiming is forced back to the user; cancelling late is not a dependable escape from that result. See the shared activation rules.[6]
Strategy
Prefer a fireball when several susceptible enemies can be caught away from you. For one target, a firebolt has a higher raw damage range, although it must hit. Neither is useful for HP damage against a fire-immune creature such as the fire elemental that supplies this wand's recipe.
Fire immunity lets you withstand the blast's fire damage, but does not make every tactical consequence harmless: the blast can wake or anger other occupants and change nearby water. Additional blessing does not protect allies or spare selected squares. Preserve charges for a clear group advantage rather than firing beside yourself without protection.[7]
