Draft:Miscellaneous items
Miscellaneous items use the white \ symbol. The category includes practical tools, valuables, the Justiciar's quest badge, junk and nine kinds of trap component. It is separate from artifacts: a useful or uniquely named object need not belong to that category.[1]
Item directory
Values are base values, not guaranteed shop prices. The table is ordered by value, then name. Seven same-behavior grot definitions share one article; their random names are listed there. Trap components all weigh 10 and have item level 0, but their effects depend on the current location's difficulty.[2]

Obtaining miscellaneous items
Ordinary item generation selects the miscellaneous category with 20 of 135 initial category draws, then selects one of its 26 definitions uniformly. It rejects the Justiciar's Badge and performs the usual item-level check, with a 1% over-level exception. These are candidate probabilities, not the final share of accepted loot. Grot occupies seven candidate slots. Ordinary miscellaneous generation copies the template's neutral blessing and zero enchantment.[3]
Useful fixed sources include the club for keys and torches, guild enrollment for a pick, and arena opponents for an opener. The Justiciar carries the badge. Disarming can recover nine kinds of identified component. The pawn shop can stock positive-value miscellaneous items through ordinary generation.[4]
Acquirement bypasses the ordinary level and uniqueness rejection. An unblessed acquisition in this category can produce any of the 26 definitions, including the badge; a blessed one allows exact selection and identifies the resulting copy. Selecting grot still gives a random junk name.[5]
Activation and identification
Use Activate (A) and choose item for keys, picks, openers and trap components. The latter must be identified before setting; unknown trial use can trigger the trap on you. Salt water and the badge instead work automatically in their specific encounters, while valuables and grot have no activation effect. The torch's lighting fault makes ordinary activation unreliable for light in this version.[6]
Activation selects from accessible inventory, not directly from the backpack. Move a tool out of the pack first. Salt water and the badge are exceptions because their automatic encounter checks also search the backpack.[7]
Appearances are mostly fixed, but two canisters and three runes are ambiguous. A grot key also looks like an unknown magic key. Clear-looking names such as gold ingot do not automatically count as formal identification. Knowing the type matters for both safe use and sale value; see Identification.[8]
Valuables and carrying choices
An unknown miscellaneous item is appraised at only 1 Au. Once its type is known, its appraisal equals base value; blessing, enchantment and charges do not increase it. For accepted items, the pawn shop pays half that appraisal, while guild fencing pays two thirds, with integer rounding; both refuse cursed items. Treasure gifts use real value independently of your knowledge.[9]
For treasure per unit of weight, bonds (600 Au) lead emeralds (150), diamonds (100) and ingots (8.75). Identify valuable-looking loot before selling. A zero-value badge can still be essential to a quest, while a one-Au salt-water bucket can be worth carrying for its protection and experience reward; sale value is not usefulness.
